Gemotions

The evening air, still warm from the day, drifted through the open window, carrying with it the scent of blooming jasmine. Elias hummed tunelessly as he watered his prize-winning petunias. Each delicate petal, a riot of purple and pink, swayed gently in the breeze. He ran a hand across his forehead, pushing back a stray lock of hair. The rhythmic swish of the water can filled the tranquil garden, punctuated only by the occasional chirping of crickets.

A sharp rap on the wooden fence startled him. Mrs. Gable, his neighbor, stood there, arms crossed, face a thundercloud. "Elias!" she called out, her voice tight with displeasure. "The music. It’s far too loud!"

Elias sighed inwardly. He hadn't even realized the music, a mellow jazz compilation, was audible beyond his own property. He turned off the water, the silence suddenly profound. "Oh, dear," he said, forcing a smile. "I’ll turn it down immediately, Mrs. Gable. Sorry to disturb you." He walked toward his porch, a slight furrow appearing between his brows, but the gentle sway of the petunias seemed to soothe the small disturbance.
